History of VOGA Victoria

Vembadi Old Girls’ Association (VOGA) has a rich history of over a century, since its birth in early 1900’s. The origin of VOGA was inspired by the gratitude of few loyal old girls and distinguished women of all walks of life produced by our alma mater Vembadi Girls High School Jaffna, who desired to rally around their school, held the First Reunion of Old Girls. In 1904, as they appreciated the great benefits they had reaped from their school, they decided it was their turn to give back. In 1915, the Old Girls Reunion was inaugurated as the Old Girls’ Association, when Miss Lythe was the Principal of Vembadi. In 1916, a meeting was held, attended by large number of former pupils of Vembadi. Office bearers were elected, and rules were drawn up.

Initially VOGA was in existence only in Sri Lanka, both in Jaffna and in Colombo, where a branch was started in 1937. However, since 1983 with the exodus of Tamils from Sri Lanka to foreign countries, VOGA has now become a global organisation as old students of Vembadi realised the need to support their alma mater during and after the civil war in Jaffna in rebuilding the school and supporting their alma mater and the future generation of the school, financially and emotionally.

Now VOGA has spread its wings to Canada, United Kingdom and Sydney and Melbourne Australia.

A new chapter of VOGA began in Melbourne, when Vembadi Old Girls’ Association - Victoria –(VOGA Vic) was incorporated in 2011, when few old girls of Vembadi in Melbourne, Australia decided that we also should start the Vembadi Old Girls’ Association in Melbourne with the aim of contributing our time and energy to raise funds to support our Alma mater, to show our gratitude as our alma mater Vembadi played a significant role in shaping us and in what we have achieved in our personal and professional lives.

An inaugural Hoppers Night was held in July 2011 and over 50 old girls of Vembadi attended this event, with their families. It was a great night and the past pupils of Vembadi felt a great sense of belonging and enjoyed each other’s company and the dinner that night.

The first committee of Vembadi Old Girls’ Association Victoria was elected at this event and the constitution of Vembadi Old Girls’ Association - Vic was subsequently drafted and VOGA-Vic was, incorporated as an Association in September 2011.

The objectives of Vembadi Old Girls Association – Vic are to promote and develop the friendship among the past pupils of Vembadi in Melbourne and with our alma mater, raise funds for pursuing community service objectives and for the benefit of our school.

We are so pleased to see that VOGA – Vic has grown from strength to strength over the years since its inception and fulfilled its objectives in developing fellowship and strengthening the friendship built over the years among the old students of Vembadi in Melbourne by organising many social and fundraising events and supported the school in many needy projects to improve the facilities of the school for the betterment of the future generation.

As one of the global branches of Vembadi Old Girls’ Association let us continue to be a strong and vibrant link with our alma mater and continue to provide financial and emotional support to the future generation of our school.

Dare to do right
