Our Crest

The crest is defined as something located at the top or a symbol of family name.

Our crest is the symbol of the family of Vembadi.

The crest of our ‘Vembadi family’ was unveiled in 1927 by Rev. P.E. Thorne. It was the brainchild of Miss Pickard, the principal of Vembadi Girls’ High School.

Our crest has a beautiful design incorporating the school name at the top, the motto in the bottom as a scroll and the purpose in the body.

The motto “Dare to do right” was introduced in 1924. The motto taught the students to overcome the fear of any illogical or wrong openions or deeds and the courage to do the ‘Right’.

The body of the crest has five palmyrah trees above and ‘butterfly emerging out of a chrysalis‘ below.

Palmyrah trees are native trees in the Jaffna peninsula where the school is located. Five palmyrah trees illustrate the characteristics of these trees namely;

  1. Strength
  2. Versatility
  3. Keep on growing
  4. Selfless services
  5. Favourless contribution to the society

Vembadi girls are expected to have these wonderful qualities of the palmyrah trees;

  1. Strong and straight in mind, spirit and body
  2. Versatile like every part of palmyrah tree being useful from leaves, trunk, roots, seeds to fruit
  3. Keep on growing even in difficult times like drought, flood or war
  4. Selflessly serving the community without expecting anything in return
  5. Not showing favouritism

The beautiful butterfly emerging from the chrysalis depicts the students studying in Vembadi in the protected environment graduate out spreading their wings as independent, active graceful women into the wider world.

This is the beautiful symbolic message of our crest.

Dare to do right
